This (what we now call the first) meeting was held to provide general information about the allocation of fishing opportunities elsewhere and share the experience o other RFMOS, for example in CCSBT where the negotiations took at least 9 years to come to an agreement on allocation.

The G16 is a group of like-minded coastal states of the Indian Ocean who has a common objective – the sustainable utilization of Indian Ocean tuna and tuna-like resources for the benefit and future of all coastal states.
