The meeting was held in the Maldives in April 2012, Hotel Jen, Male City. The meeting was sponsored by the WWF through a grant from the ABNJ Commons Ocean Project
The meeting was essentially a capacity building exercise on rights-based-management of fisheries focusing on highly migratory species in the context of IOTC. The material was also in preparation for the Management Strategy Evaluation work on skipjack that was just stated in IOTC.

The G16 is a group of like-minded coastal states of the Indian Ocean who has a common objective – the sustainable utilization of Indian Ocean tuna and tuna-like resources for the benefit and future of all coastal states.
