Mauritius

Mauritius has a coastline of 330 km and has one of the largest Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of all countries in Southern and East Africa (1.28 million square km ). In 2018, Mauritius had two purse seiners, one supply vessel and 13 semi-industrial longliners operating in the tuna fishery. The semi-industrial longline vessels operated exclusively inside the EEZ and comprised of five vessels. They caught 130 t of tuna and tuna-like species. The majority of the catch consisted of yellowfin tuna (35.5%), albacore tuna (28.4%) and swordfish (16%). Eight semi-industrial longline vessels operated outside the EEZ. Their total catch was 691 t and the majority of the catch consisted of swordfish (44%), followed by yellowfin tuna (30%). The total catch of the two purse seiners amounted to 22 529 t and comprised of yellowfin tuna (50%), skipjack tuna (41%) and bigeye tuna (8%).
