Australia has a coastline of 25 760 km  and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of nearly 11 million km 2 , the third largest in the world. Pelagic longline and purse seine are the two main fishing methods used by Australian vessels to target tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) Area of Competence. In 2018, five longline vessels operated in the IOTC Area of Competence. They caught 11.9 t of albacore tuna, 45.7 t of bigeye tuna, 37.8 t of yellowfin tuna, 161.2 t of swordfish and 0.5 t of striped marlin. In 2018, there was no skipjack tuna caught by purse seine fishing.
